The angry old man's latest pet peeve

What's with the trend of newspapers allowing readers to post comments to stories on their websites? I mean, yeah, I shouldn't read them, but people are flipping scary (as well as incapable of using appropriate apostrohpe's and all other grammatical rules)! At least letters to the editor have to be vetted to some degree.

I think it's a good thing (not surprisingly.) they either want to have a direct conversation with readers or they want their point of view to be the only one presented. it's no coincidence that the vast majority of right wing blogs don't allow comments while the left wing blogs encourage a diversity of views. not that I'm calling you right wing or anything and not that a newspaper claims to be a blog but I like that they are not just reprinting articles online but instead using the interactivity that the internet affords.

Ok, so perhaps I'm just reading the comments from the wrong newspapers. The Baltimore Sun's readership is racist and homophobic, and yet they seem downright enlightened when compared to USA Today's readers.
