Me and a David

I read a book (or two)

I read this book on the plane last night. I really enjoyed it. On the way out to SF, I read The Cheese Monkeys. It started strong, but ended meekly.

Culinary tour of SF

We have spent the weekend eating our way through San Francisco. Have to say, the Zuni Cafe was quite the delightful experience. Sadly, we go home this morning just as the weather gets especially lovely.

Laaa-aaaaaaame

Pointless and painful.

I don't care that I never win...

I love this game anyway!

Laaa-aaaaaaame

I was told to go into the movie with low expectations. I did and I still thought it blew. There was no drama, no story. There was a plot, but no story. It was as if they just went into making the film saying "everyone loves Indiana Jones, we don't actually need to create any emotionally compelling connection with the audience!" And really no surprises, or rather the surprises there were were telegraphed well in advance. You're like, oh really, that's all you got? I saw that coming 10 minutes ago.

But then again, Rotten Tomatoes ranks it as 79% fresh so what do I know?

Idol Finale Liveblog

Round 1:

David Cook's I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For vs. David Archuletta's Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me. Solid choices both. Might go to Archuletta by a hair. I don't think I was as enthusiastic as the judges about David A's performance, but he definitely brought it. Good to see both of them rising to the occasion.

Round 2:

David Cook singing lame new song "Dream Big." I agree with Simon that he did the best he could with what he had. Archie singing the slightly less lame song "In This Moment." This round is David A's by a mile. Just a rough choice by Cook, although I guess he wanted to rock one round. It's just it was too insubstantial a song.

Round 3:

David Cook freakin rocked Collective Soul out. That was a ridiculously great version of that song. Better than the original. But it's going up against David A's Imagine, which was a highlight from early in the season, and, as Randy said, he's definitely in the zone.

Archuletta has it. No contest. But good on ya David C.

UPDATE: Seems I have a knack for picking the runner-up.

Other nice monsters.

here's to equality

Thursday was a very big day in CA.

In a stunning 4-3 decision, the California Supreme Court has ruled that the ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional making it the second state after Massachusetts to allow gay couples to legally marry.

From calitics, the majority opinion concludes:

in light of the conclusions we reach concerning the constitutional questions brought to us for resolution, we determine that the language of section 300 limiting the designation of marriage to a union "between a man and a woman" is unconstitutional and must be stricken from the statute, and that the remaining statutory language must be understood as making the designation of marriage available both to opposite-sex and same-sex couples. In addition, because the limitation of marriage to opposite-sex couples imposed by section 308.5 can have no constitutionally permissible effect in light of the constitutional conclusions set forth in this opinion, that provision cannot stand.

So what does this mean going forward?

Plaintiffs are entitled to the issuance of a writ of mandate directing the appropriate state officials to take all actions necessary to effectuate our ruling in this case so as to ensure that county clerks and other local officials throughout the state, in performing their duty to enforce the marriage statutes in their jurisdictions, apply those provisions in a manner consistent with the decision of this court.

Wow.

Ah, sweet progress.

sometimes Michael Scott says what I'm thinking

"I have a very strong prejudice against Human Resources. I believe the department is a breeding ground for monsters."

Seriously. Where's the appeal?

David Archuleta is a freaking broken record. Sounds the same everytime. If only I were a prepubescent girl, then maybe I'd get it.

(Why am I so invested in this?)

heh

I get e-mails

This makes me sad.
I've been a Dem my whole life and I am disgusted with the Democratic Party. To tick off women who make up the base of the party is crazy. I know many women who will not vote in November.

I hope the Obama nuts are happy. We will be looking at a President McCain come November.
There really is this sense among some women that she was owed this nomination. Sigh. It was hers if she wanted it. She has no one to blame but herself for the errors that have led to today.
